The Complete Guide to Caring for Your Cotton Clothes

Cotton is the most worn fabric in India — but are you washing, drying, and storing it correctly? Read our complete care guide.

Cotton is beloved for its softness, breathability, and versatility — it's the fabric of choice for most Indians, especially in warm climates. But without proper care, cotton can shrink, fade, and lose its shape quickly. Here's how to keep your cotton garments looking their best.

Washing Cotton

Most cotton garments can be machine washed. Follow these guidelines:

  • Use cold or lukewarm water (30°C or less) to prevent shrinking.
  • Turn garments inside out to protect the surface and reduce fading.
  • Use a mild detergent — harsh chemicals can break down cotton fibres over time.
  • Avoid hot water for coloured cottons as it causes faster fading.
  • Delicate cycle is ideal for printed or embroidered cotton pieces.

Drying Cotton

Air drying is best for cotton. Avoid machine drying on high heat as it causes significant shrinkage. Lay flat to dry (or hang on a wide hanger) in the shade — direct sunlight can fade colours. For white cotton, a little sun exposure can actually brighten the fabric naturally.

Ironing Cotton

Cotton irons beautifully and is one of the few fabrics that actually benefits from a hot iron. Iron while slightly damp for the crispest results. For embroidered or printed cotton, always iron inside out or place a thin cloth between the iron and the garment.

Storing Cotton

  • Fold cotton t-shirts and casualwear rather than hanging to avoid stretching.
  • Hang cotton dress shirts and kurtas to maintain their shape.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Cedar balls or neem leaves are natural alternatives to chemical mothballs.

Dealing with Common Cotton Problems

Shrinkage: Prevent it by always washing in cold water. If it has already shrunk, soak in lukewarm water with a little hair conditioner and gently stretch it back to shape while wet.

Fading: Add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle to help colours stay vibrant longer.

Pilling: Caused by friction. Wash delicate cotton items in a mesh laundry bag to reduce pilling.

With the right care routine, a quality cotton garment can last for years — and keep looking as good as the day you bought it.
